We stopped at a bike shop looking for directions to a good ride in the area, and happened to find a guide book author dropping off some fresh copies of his new book. We told him our desires and he recommended Monument Ridge. We bought his book, The Book: Guide to Mountain Biking in the Jackson Hole Area, and drove out to the recommended trail.
The trail started on as an 8 mile fire road, and as we headed up, the clouds
grew darker. At about 3 miles into it, we decided to turn back. We got to
the car as the rain started, and got the bikes on top just before it started
to hail.
We headed back to town, and drove right out from under the weather system into a nice blue-sky afternoon. Looking through The Book, we found directions to Cache Creek, which the author said was nice, but overused. I want to bring the author to Kettles some day, as we saw 1 horse, 4 other bikes, and 3 hikers in our entire ride. He doesn't know what overused means.
We
rode up a fire road through interesting prairie plants, then came back down
a singletrack called Little Hagen, which was more technical then the trail
in Montana, but also a little better maintained. We crossed bridges and climbed
rises and dropped back into the creek flood plain.
In
one high meadow we found a local trying to change her first flat. Good patrollers
that we are, we stopped to assist. She offered us dinner in return for the
help, but we requested she repay us by joining IMBA instead. She gave us some
trail advice which we followed, although almost taking a wrong turn that would've
headed us up the ski hill Snow King, but made it back to the car.
