We
also did a day hike up Mt Washburn. Hiking from Dunraven Pass, we climbed
1400 feet over 3 miles to reach the observation station at the top of the
mountain, 10,200 feet above sea level.
As warm as we were from hiking, we were happy to be wearing long pants and
jackets, as the winds whipped chill gales around us. Scott took photos from
the breezy deck while Rita held onto the monopole to keep it from blowing
away. We came inside often, where there were windows and a scope, and some
books where visitors had been leaving messages - mostly "I made it!" with
name and origin, and for the smaller hikers, their age.
From
the lookout, we could see smoke the fire in the valley - not one of the big
wildfires, but a small natural burn that the "Prescribed
Fire" organization was watching from ambulance like trucks.
As we headed back down the way we came, we saw more great views. Scott was entranced by the moss on the trees at this altitude, Rita with the colors in the conglomerate rock.
